  • Thoughts on roster composition for the next two off-seasons

Jazz Roster as it stands now

    G: Mitchell | Butler
    G: Ingles | Clarkson | Oni | Hughes
    F: O'Neale | Thomas | Teague
    F: Bogdanovic |
    C: Gobert | Azubuike

I think when free agency starts the Jazz re-sign Mike Conley for 3/75, and Georges Niang at 2/10.
    They also cut Matt Thomas

Jazz Roster as it stands after the first days of free agency

    G: Conley | Butler
    G: Mitchell | Clarkson | Oni | Hughes
    F: O'Neale | Ingles | Teague
    F: Bogdanovic | Niang
    C: Gobert | Azubuike

Morgan and Brantley will both be in the Jazz summer league and I expect Forrest will be as well.
All 3 will be given a chance to actually make the roster.

Jazz roster after signing those 3.

    G: Conley | Butler | Forrest
    G: Mitchell | Clarkson | Oni | Hughes
    F: O'Neale | Ingles | Teague
    F: Bogdanovic | Niang | Brantley
    C: Gobert | Azubuike | Morgan

The Jazz biggest holes will be the same holes that they went into 2020-21 with. Lack of perimiter defense and back up center.

After those signings the Jazz cap will stand at about 166.9 million

    My predictions for the Jazz:

    Khem Birch 2/3M
    Brad Wanamaker 2/4M
    David Nwaba 1/2M

    G: Conley | Butler | Wannamaker| Forrest
    G: Mitchell | Clarkson | Oni | Hughes
    F: O'Neale | Ingles | Nwaba | Teague
    F: Bogdanovic | Niang | Brantley
    C: Gobert | Birch| Azubuike | Morgan

This takes the Jazz into camp with a salary of 172.4 and 18 players.

I think Teague, Forrest, and Brantley are the guys who ultimately do not make the roster. Leaving the Jazz with a salary of 169.4 and this roster.

    G: Conley | Butler | Wannamaker
    G: Mitchell | Clarkson | Oni | Hughes
    F: O'Neale | Ingles | Nwaba
    F: Bogdanovic | Niang | Morgan
    C: Gobert | Birch| Azubuike

    TW: Teague and Forrest

The Jazz will be roughly 32 million above the tax and have about a 64 million dollar tax bill

Going into the 22-23 season, with these signings the Jazz should have a salary of 146.4 million with this roster.

    G: Conley | Butler | Wannamaker|
    G: Mitchell | Clarkson
    F: O'Neale | Nwaba |
    F: Bogdanovic | Niang |
    C: Gobert | Birch| Azubuike

This is where things are going to get ugly for the Jazz. They have 12 players (If Dokes option is taken and I think it will be), and no first-round pick and possibly a 2nd round pick from the Butler trade.

The luxury tax will likely be 140 million. Meaning that the Jazz with 12 players and Joe Ingles, Miye Oni, and Elijah Huges as free agents are still 6.4 million over the tax. There is no way the Jazz pay the tax a third straight season. They simply cannot afford it.

I expect that going into the 2022 draft, or maybe sooner like the deadline, the Jazz will move Ingles, Bogdanovic and Clarkson for cheaper pieces.

Thanks for the recap Red !

That's some pretty steep price for the 2021

I'm hopimg for Bobby, but i think he goes back to the Bucks

The Jazz are not going to be trading any of their key players.

Ryan Smith is willing to pay tax to have a championship contending roster.

So the Jazz have 15 guys under contract (Oni and Brantley are non-guaranteed) and 1 2-way deal so far (Trent Forrest). It looks like there is room for 1 more 2-way deal and that should solidify things.

I think the Jazz will cut Brantley at some point and convert Teague to a 2-way
