Abyss

 By Ron Richards

Depth and deep are terms used to describe the quality of a team's bench. For most teams, the farther you are from the head coach during the game, the chance of actually playing in a game becomes about the same as Diane Lane calling because she missed me. It's a sad state of affairs.

The Jazz have passed that point and are sinking fast into the abyss, for with each passing game the players to the right of Jerry are getting fewer, and the players to the immediate rear of Jerry are growing in number.

It's a troubling trend, but it has a silver lining or two beside the patrician locks on Jerry's noggin. One, the GQ factor is increasing exponentially, while the angst of Jazz fans is somewhat abated by the stellar play of leviathans rising from the depths to take their place in the hierarchy of this incredibly talented Jazz team.

A stellar example is Kostas Koufos, or Kouf as he's know by his team-mates. Most Jazz fans and scribes had him penciled in for the Flash, to commute from SLC and the Jazz practice facility to give the farm team a boost.

Not this year, or ever. Kouf has earned a place on the Jazz team, and seems destined to be one of the rarest of NBA creatures, a rookie who actually plays his first year for Jerry Sloan. My how times have changed. Even Deron Williams spent his time in the canine condo his rookie year, but Paul Millsap and now Kouf are breaking the mold, earning praise and living the dream of a valued and valiant reserve. – full article
Blue-Blockers

 By Ron Richards

Most of you probably remember the advertisements for the miracle sunglasses, I think they were called 'Blue-Ray', or 'Blue-Blockers', long before the new process for viewing movies was announced.

They were supposed to block the harmful part of the light spectrum, and enhance your viewing pleasure of the world. They looked real cool when you first put them on, as the world took on a different flavor. Like most gimmicks, they were of dubious value.   – full article

 Don't get No Respect

 By Ron Richards

No, we’re not talking about me, or my golf game. That’s another story.  I’m talking about the Utah Jazz.

I know, that’s a cliché, an old sob story, a browbeaten hack and yesterdays’ news. No, it’s not. It’s true. It’s a fact, a certainty, bank on it.

The Jazz are seemingly stuck out here in never-never land, lost somewhere between New York and Los Angeles. Is there anything between Los Angeles and New York? Besides Chicago? It makes a lifelong Utahn wonder. – full article

How hard is rebuilding

July 24 is a Utah State Holiday. It commemorates the arrival of the pioneers. It’s a huge event for Utahns. So much so they put on one of the biggest parades in the country. The Jazz have a float in the parade which is carrying some Jazz dancers, and has banners spelling out each player’s name.  – full article

It ended with a spectacular if meaningless slam by Ky Fesenko that illuminated and personified the whole Revue in a nutshell. Like a giant cat, Fess covered half the court in two graceful bounds and nearly ripped the rim off the backboard. So much talent, so little to show for it.   – full article By Ron Richards

Those of you who are Star Trek fans may remember when student James Kirk was tested in Starship Commander Training at the Academy, when he was given a no win situation in a battle with overwhelming odds against him. Faced with no choice but to
